The country’s top turf specialist makes his return to the Surf.
Klaravich Stables Inc.’s DOMESTIC SPENDING, the country’s top turf specialist from the barn of Chad Brown, returns to Del Mar for the first time in almost a year. He captured the Hollywood Derby (G1) at the surf back on November 28th, 2020, and has been spectacular ever since.
On Breeders Cup Day, I expect him to be a second favorite to TARNAWA, hopefully at generous enough odds. Bovada assigned him 9-2 odds, which I think is too high and pure wishful thinking.
Let’s take a look at the probable field, courtesy of Horse Racing Nation.
The $4 million Breeders Cup Turf (G1) — 1 1/2 miles, Turf, Three-year-olds and upward.
- DOMESTIC SPENDING
- WALTON STREET
- CHANNEL MAKER
- SAY THE WORD
DOMESTIC SPENDING is a four-year-old gelding by KINGMAN out of URBAN CASTLE by STREET CRY. He’s a three time Grade 1 winner and owns a lifetime record of 8: 6-1-1-1, with over $1.4 million in earnings. Last time out, he ran second in the Mr. D. (G1) at Arlington Park, beaten just by a neck to the wire-to-wire pacesetter, TWO EMMYS.
Jockey Flavien Prat was aboard for the last three races and I hope he’s back for the task. DOMESTIC SPENDING owns the most impressive Thoro-Pattern: 1, -1.5, 1. Sure, he hasn’t raced in more than two months but he’s fired big off of longer layoffs before.
It’s my opinion that the Mr. D. stakes had just such incredibly slow fractions that day for any closer to reel in the pacesetter that day. They ran an opening half in :52.4 and the third quarter in 1:16.6, and DOMESTIC SPENDING was the only closer making any serious rally. The fact he got up and lost by only a neck, while setting a new top Late Pace figure shows me he’s capable of far better. The replay of the Mr. D. is shown below.
Underneath DOMESTIC SPENDING, I’ll certainly have to play TARNAWA for the simple fact that she is just a purely talented race horse. The Dermot Weld trainee has been first or second in her last seven races. She owns a lifetime record of 17: 9-4-2, with over $4.4 million in the bank. The five-year-old mare by SHAMARDAL was last seen finishing a brave second in the Arc de Triomphe, perhaps caught off guard by the winner TORQUATOR TASSO. TARNAWA was busy dueling with the talented HURRICANE LANE when from the near side, TORQUATOR TASSO emerged with the furious late rally to nip them both right before the wire. Her Thoro-Pattern is superb: 2, 1.75, 1.50. She needed a Thorograph figure of just 1 to capture last year’s running of the Breeders Cup Turf, and she looks poised to deal an effort of that same measure.
I’m tempted to play UNITED and ROCKEMPOROR also underneath. But I’m suspicious of how they’ll respond after running what’s arguably their best race of their entire career. I’m not sure if they take another step forward, or bounce backward. Both scored a new top Thorograph Figure of 1.75 and 1, respectively. Instead, I’m looking for a horse who looks ready to run a big race and will step up in order to win. I’ll get more odds that way. My two candidates are GUFO and WALTON STREET.
GUFO touts a Thoro-Pattern of: 3, 2.5, 2.75, and could put it together to take the prize. He’s proven he can close well at the Surf; he finished third in the Hollywood Derby (G1), with just a neck separating him from the winner.
WALTON STREET looks attractive at a potential price from trainer Charles Appleby. He owns a Thoro-Pattern of: 2, 3, 2. With a step forward he can very well run this field down.
I’ll go with DOMESTIC SPENDING on top, with TARNAWA, GUFO and WALTON STREET underneath.
